Exploring Feelings - A Therapy Program to Manage Anger
A Six, Two Hour Session Program! The Cognitive Behavior Therapy program Exploring Feelings was designed to be highly structured, interesting and successful in encouraging the cognitive control of emotions.
Every child participating in the six, two hour session program will have activities and information to explore the specific feelings of being happy, relaxed, anxious or angry.
There are sections for children to record individual comments and responses to questions. At the end of each session, a project is explained to the child, which is to be completed before the next session. At the start of the next session the project is discussed with the person implementing the program or the group of participants using the program.
The original program was designed for small groups of two to five children between the ages of 9 and 12 years, with two adults conducting the program. However, the Exploring Feelings program can easily be modified so that it can be used with an individual child. The activities can also be modified to be age appropriate for an adolescent or adult.
The program was designed as a treatment for an anxiety disorder or anger management problem in children with Asperger's syndrome but the program can be equally applied to children with High Functioning Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified (PDDNOS).
Temper Tamers In a Jar
Learn how to calm down and keep your cool in order to control your temper and express your feelings in positive ways. Use Temper Tamers In a Jar to promote group discussions about healthy ways to deal with anger. Individuals can also use cards to learn calming strategies for tense or difficult situations.
There are four different kinds of cards:
- What Would You Do? Cards: These cards present difficult scenarios. You're asked to imagine yourself in tense situations and provide answers for how you'd respond.
- Tips! Cards: Here's advice for positive actions you can take when you feel angry.
- Share Cards: These cards encourage you to share personal stories about how you deal with anger.
- Act It Out! Cards: You're again asked to provide positive ways to deal with anger. This time, you act them out (sometimes with a friend).
How to Take the Grrrr Out of Anger
Anger is a part of life. We can't avoid it, we shouldn't stuff it, and we can't make it go away. Kids need help learning how to manage their anger. This book speaks directly to them and offers strategies they can start using immediately.
Blending solid information and sound advice with jokes and funny cartoons, the book guides kids to understand that anger is normal and can be expressed in many ways - some healthy, some not. It teaches children how to recognize anger in themselves and others, how to handle situations and emotions (loneliness, guilt, frustration, fear) that lead to or mask anger, and how to deal with the anger they feel.
Young readers learn that violence is not acceptable and there are better, safer, more positive ways to resolve conflicts. They also discover what to do when people around them are angry, how to get help, and how to locate other resources (books, hotlines, school groups) when they need more support.
