Kids love to play dominoes, and Play-2-Learn Dominoes is a line of therapeutic/counseling games that puts the fun of playing dominoes to work helping kids learn important skills.
Empathy Counts: This is a therapeutic and educational game developed to teach young people to understand the concept of empathy, to be empathetic, and to take positive actions towards others based on empathy. It is designed for elementary aged children but can also be used as high-interest material for older students. These guidelines can be used by therapists, teachers, counselors in a school setting, or parents at home.
There are four decks of cards, each covering a different aspect of the players' lives: Friendship, Activities and Hobbies, At School, and All about Myself. Empathy is the ability to understand how others are feeling about issues. We often say that a person with empathy understands what it is like being in someone else's shoes. Empathy is essential for building lasting friendships and positive relationships with family members and adults. Empathy is a complex concept, and the skills required for empathy are not easy to learn. This game takes an incremental approach, teaching basic skills and moving on to more complex skills. There are three ways of playing in order to make the game age appropriate for players.
Feelings Fun: In this game players have fun playing dominoes while learning how to express positive and negative feelings appropriately, recognize feelings, and care about the feelings of others. Before playing a domino, a player picks a card from one of four decks and either answers a question or practices a skill. The Understanding the Feelings of Others cards help players learn to accurately perceive feelings in others. This is a vital skill for developing empathy. The Four W's cards help players identify feelings and how to deal appropriately with difficult feelings; each question starts with "Who", "What", "Why", or "When". The Action cards give players practice dealing with situations that involve strong feelings. The Talk about a Time cards help players identify their feelings and give them the opportunity to share with other players' situations that evoked a variety of feelings.
Bully Wise: In this game players have fun playing dominoes while learning how all kids can work to reduce bullying and violence. Before playing a domino, a player picks a card from one of four decks and either answers a question or practices a skill. The cards turn the players into experts on bullying. They are called upon to give advice to targets of bullying, bystanders, and even the bullies. They also give advice on whether situations call for the aid of an adult. The Target Expert cards help players learn specific nonviolent steps that targets can take to reduce bullying. The bystander Expert cards demonstrate the power of bystanders to reduce bullying and help players learn specific things that they can do to reduce bullying. The Bully Expert cards help bullies understand that they can achieve their goals of popularity and social status without resorting to bullying. The Getting Help cards give players guidelines about when kids should try to handle situations themselves and when going to an adult is essential.
Friendship: In this game players have fun playing dominoes while learning how to make new friends, be a good friend, and resolve conflicts in a win-win way. Before playing a domino, a player picks a card from one of four decks and either answers a question or practices a skill. The Ups and Downs cards help players deal successfully with the inevitable problems that arise between friends. The Four W's cards deal with challenging friendship situations; each question starts with "Who", "What", "Why", or "When". The Having Fun cards ask players to give examples of positive interactions with friends from their own experience. The Making Friends cards give players an opportunity to discuss how they would handle initial peer interaction situations.
Anger Control: In this game, players have fun playing dominoes while learning to manage their anger and problem-solve in a thoughtful, assertive, and respectful way. Before playing a domino, a player picks a card from one of four decks and either answers a question or practices a skill. The Angry or Not cards give players practice distinguishing between situations that generally cause people to get angry and situations where anger is inappropriate. The Skills cards give players practice using a set of skills to help control their anger. Skills include thinking first, taking deep breaths, being assertive rather than aggressive, etc. The Action cards give practice dealing with anger in pro-social and appropriate ways.
The My Anger Stories cards give players a chance to share the kinds of things that make them angry and demonstrate how to successfully deal with such situations and the resulting anger.
